PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Oasis regions in Mauritania cover nearly 58% of the national territory and group a sedentary population (800 000 inhabitants) located in nearly 200 oases. These regions are characterized by a severe enclosing and a lack of basic infrastructures such as the supply of drinking water, health and education infrastructures which constitute additional hindrances to their economic development. Employment opportunities are practically non-existent in these poor environments and their only source of agricultural production comes from palm stands and animal husbandry around the oases.
Within the context of the DRSP, the program on the sustainable development of oases aims at reducing the high poverty rate among rural populations of the affected five regions as well as limiting rural exodus. To achieve this, the program includes five main components:
structuring of oasis communities (creation of basic organizations among target populations); |
sustainable development of oasis production capacities (promotion of sustainable agricultural systems through the development and distribution of appropriate techniques and know-how in the field of management and the procurement of assistance in terms of marketing); |
support to decentralized financial systems (strengthening of existing decentralized micro-credit structures); |
realization of basic economic, social and community infrastructures; |
program coordination, follow-up and evaluation. |
