For this project, the environmental department of Teknika HBA had for mandate to carry out a study of the environmental repercussion of the project in order to obtain an authorization certificate from the Environment and Fauna Ministry.
The Glenford power plant site is highly regarded in its own environment, for its recreational character and its aesthetic value. The studies were oriented toward the biologic environment (spawns, ichthyological species present) the physical environment (sedimentation, hydrology, ice mechanics), human environment (recreational, tenure, development projects) also on the economical aspects (beneficial economic effects).
The major identified impacts concerned excavation, the implementation and the dismantling of the bulkheads, the raising of the water plan, transportation, the circulation and the start-up of the hydroelectric power plant. Reduction measures were also proposed.
Finally, enhancement measures of the site were also elaborated. Amongst these measures, their is the implementation of an up steam protection gate of the headworks, of 40 m long with 2 cm openings to avoid the downfall of the fish in the turbines. Two canoe launch decks, as well as a portage trail were also identified. Finally, the actual belvedere was made safer and its' access made easier. |
