PROJECT DESCRIPTION The City of Sherbrooke is engulfed by two large rivers – the Magog River and the Saint-François River – the river edges housing various types of commercial, industrial and recreotouristical activities. At the heart of the city, we find the Lac des Nations, bordering the Magog River. The Sherbrooke and surrounding population has always used these shores for recreational purposes or for outdoor shows.
The City of Sherbrooke had decided to reinforce the importance of Lac des Nations by rehabilitating Rue de l’Esplanade. This rehabilitation project is part of the main Sherbrooke–Cité des Rivières recreotouristical project, including major development of the Magog River gorge, the rehabilitation of the Place de la Gare, the development surrounding Lac des Nations as well as the thematic gardens.
This rehabilitation project consists in the creation of an esplanade bordering the Lac des Nations, in the heart of the City of Sherbrooke. More specifically, this project allowed the creation of a walking and cycling path, both separated by a fully landscaped median. The project proposed a series of rest areas, enhanced by water fountains allowing for a spectacular view on the Lac des Nations. During the mandate, a detailed analysis and research was realized in order to obtain original elements regarding urban furniture and fixtures, lighting and the design of surface elements.
The design of this project was in close relation with respect to the urban environment, as well as for future developments planned in the short term. With the series of rest areas and parks, the rehabilitation of the rue de l’Esplanade, allowed the visitors a close relationship to the lake and its natural surroundings. |
