MINISTÈRE DES TRANSPORTS
APPROACH TO THE HIGHWAY 20 BRIDGE
ON THE "EAST" ROADWAY

CLIENT
Ministère des Transports

LOCATION
Saint-Louis-de-Blandford, spanning Rivière Bécancour

DURATION
2003
PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS
Approaches (highway engineering)
The project involved excavation and roadway structure work, to allow for preserving the existing roadway as much as possible while minimizing the need for outside materials and promoting the use of recycled materials. Establishing a detour on the "west" roadway (Montréal), which required that motorists circulate against the traffic, involved specific elements as well as highly detailed and accurate signalization. The use of alternate courses also required that particular care be paid with regard to signalization. Lastly, river works required specific knowledge of the environmental standards and regulations to be adhered to.
Bridge (structural engineering)
Specifics with regard to this aspect of the project included:
- All of the calculations and analyses required under standard S6-00 needed to take into account that the bridge was classified as an earthquake-proof "emergency bridge".
- The demolition of the existing bridge needed to adhere to strict environmental regulations.
- The new bridge design was created using the Visual Design software application.
SERVICES RENDERED
All activities regarding the preparation of plans and specifications, as well as RFP estimates, were carried out by a team of highly qualified experts. Due in part to a well-coordinated schedule, the project was completed within the very tight deadline, and the allotted construction budgets adhered to.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Teknika HBA prepared the plans, specifications and estimates for the demolition of the existing bridge, the construction of the new structure, the development of highway approaches, the abutting roadway, the necessary traffic signalization, and other related works.
Approaches (highway engineering)
The mandate included the rebuilding of the Highway 20 roadway over more than 1 kilometre, due to the raising of the new bridge deck as a means of facilitating the runoff from Rivière Bécancour. The roadwork involved was valued at over one million dollars. It comprised the roadway reconstruction activities, including traffic control by means of detours on the "west" roadway, signalization according to the regulations established in the 2003 action plan, certain development activities required to ensure the safety of motorists travelling on the "west" roadway, and the development of an alternate course via routes 162 and 165 (could be travelled on a permanent basis, towards the "east" (Québec City) or the "west" (Montréal)). In addition to these works, the river needed to be widened at its runoff point. This necessitated slope stabilization, as well as the establishment of construction rules in line with environmental standards.
Bridge (structural engineering)
The work consisted of demolishing the existing bridge and rebuilding a new structure with the following characteristics :
- Total bridge length: 142.7 metres
- Total bridge width: 13.52 metres
- Height: 7.5 metres
- Bridge deck with reinforced concrete slab, on four 1,900 high AT steel beams
